On 1 September 2026 Vanuatu filed suit against France at the International Court of Justice over sovereignty of the Matthew and Hunter Islands and the maritime boundary with New Caledonia — invoking forum prorogatum, since France has not accepted the Court's compulsory jurisdiction since 1974.
