Description
Brain Drug Delivery for the Treatment of Neurological Disorders, edited by Touraj Ehtezazi (Reader in Pharmaceutics, Liverpool John Moores University), gathers the pharmaceutical science needed to design new treatments for chronic, non-communicable neurological disorders — conditions that, unlike stroke or infectious brain disease, still lack a coordinated research and delivery framework. Fourteen chapters from an international group of contributors cover the blood-brain barrier's role in treatment resistance, physiological barriers to drug delivery, novel nanoparticle and exosome-based delivery systems, monoclonal antibody targeting, and the industrial and regulatory steps required to bring a brain-targeted therapy to market. Part of the established Drugs and the Pharmaceutical Sciences series.
Key Features
- Summarizes in vitro and in vivo evaluation methods for brain drug delivery systems, including techniques that complement imaging approaches such as IVIS.
- Surveys novel delivery platforms in active development, including nanoparticles, exosomes, and monoclonal antibodies engineered to cross the blood-brain barrier. Read our blog post on blood-brain barrier nanoparticle delivery.
- Addresses industrial-scale production and the regulatory considerations formulation scientists must plan for before a brain-targeted therapy can reach clinical use.
Coverage
- Physiological barriers that limit drug delivery to the diseased brain, and strategies to overcome them
- Novel nanoparticle and exosome-based delivery systems, and monoclonal antibody targeting of the brain
- Hematological, immunological, and cytotoxic safety evaluation of brain-targeted delivery systems
- Personalised therapies for rare neurological disorders, and industrial and regulatory considerations for scale-up
About the Editor

Why buy this book?
Non-communicable neurological disorders are rising in prevalence worldwide, yet the pharmaceutical science needed to get a therapy across the blood-brain barrier remains fragmented across journals and specialties. This volume brings formulation science, in vitro/in vivo evaluation methods, and the industrial and regulatory pathway together in one reference, making it a practical acquisition for pharmaceutical science departments, neuroscience research libraries, and drug development teams working on CNS-targeted therapies.
